  • An X can represent a "cross". Cross goes to criss-cross which goes to criss which goes to Christ. I just made that up but it could be true.
  • This abbreviation for Christmas is of Greek origin. The word for Christ in Greek is Xristos. During the 16th century, Europeans began using the first initial of Christ's name, "X" in place of the word Christ in Christmas as a shorthand form of the word. Although the early Christians understood that X stood for Christ's name, later Christians who did not understand the Greek language mistook "Xmas" as a sign of disrespect. http://wilstar.com/xmas/xmassymb.htm
  • I always wondered that to as a child. I thougt is because the "sound" was similiar. Go figure . . . the ideas that come from a child.
  • Very much, its a celebration of the birth of Christ, thats the whole point, how longs does an extra 5 letters take to write ?
  • Not at all. And btw, happy holidays!
  • No it doesnt
  • X-mas is similar to Bill, Joe, Maggi, Liz and the like!
  • Of course not, since I know that the "X" is an abbreviation for Christ. I believe the X or chi (Greek) is the first letter of one of the more common names for Christ in that language. So it has been used for hundreds, if not thousands of years. There is certainly nothing "sacreligious" about it. It is only the uninformed that would take umbrage at this abbreviation.
  • Doesnt matter to me, but over all I prefer Happy Hollidays, so if you stay drunk you wont be behind on the greeting :)
  • It is just another example of "pop" culture silent attack on Christianity... But I know what is going to happen by me posting this... But I post anyway... Merry Christmas...
  • nah my grandma hates it though shes a very devoted christian and when shortening it she writes C-Mas :) i think its kinda cute
  • This is an Old Savior's Tale. Check this: http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/xmasabbr.asp However, times do change. Nowadays xmas is about a freshly-cut evergreen tree festooned with colorful lights, and brightly-wrapped presents on the floor beneath it. Also eggnog with lots of brandy. Can you believe that some people are trying to turn xmas into some kind of religios event?? The nerve! :)
  • No it doesn' irritate me cause i use it all the time! Did you ask this question cause you saw my Xmas..lol
  • It only really bothers me when people actually PRONOUNCE it that way ("EX-mas").
  • no, not at all; i do it when i'm in a hurry.
  • I wish we'd just refer to it as the holidays. You simply cannot escape doing xmas. You are a scrooge if you don't participate especially for the kids we just have to. So for that the others who are not christians should be able and free to say xmas. But if you are a christian I can see how you would want to always say it or spell it w/the christ in front.
  • It does bother me some. Without Christ there is no Christmas so how can you take him out of the word. I prefer C-mas if you feel the need to shorten in!
  • Makes you wonder if they call Christ "X".
  • Only if you are talking about the "X-mas Story" (Christ's birth) - WHY there is a Christmas in the first place.
  • The X represents the cross and hence related to the word "Christ-mas"
  • Yes!!!!!
  • Yeah! I hate it when these pagans try to take over another religion's holiday! Christmas has ALWAYS been about Christ (that name starting with Chi (X) in Greek). I mean, just how fundamentally obnoxious would it be for one religion to take over the celebration of another religion?!?!!! December 25th has always been about the birth of Christ (even though he was born sometime in May) and that is why we celebrate the TWELVE DAYS with evergreens and a YULE log. Those pesky pagans should stick to their own holidays.
