With so many divorces and thus many single families,how has the old concept of the "family unit" changed?

The "average" American family, statistically speaking is white, speaks only English, is married for the first time and has one child.

A lot changed, I should say. Family unit in the old concept refers to a joint family. Now am speaking with respect to our culture(And in general it holds good for all). A joint family, comprising of everyone- the bride's and the groom's relatives. Or in most cases, the bride goes to her husband's family after marriage(leaving her relatives) and she becomes a part of the husband's family. The joint family in this case refers to the latter. Divorces are leading to more neutral families and divorces in neutral families are leading to homeless children.The concept of living with relatives, neighbours, the joy and dignity of being as a unified group no longer exists.

It's changed to include very close friends of the family as well.
