"Black family members" is a misnomer; they are in no way related to John McCain. McCain's great-great-grandfather owned a plantation with slaves, and these people are the descendants of those slaves. He probably refused to meet them because he has no ties to them and really doesn't want to take time out of his busy life to meet the descendants of the workers from 170 years ago. Where would we draw the line? What if the descendants of McCain's great-great-grandmother's tailor had an anniversary, would he be obligated to send a gift? Certainly that would be considered ludicrous. So no, it's not racist.

Yeah I heard about this... I'm not quite ready to pass my judgment on a man who cheated on his dying wife and called her a f**king cunt on TV. There is nothing else any news channel can throw at me that will make me hate the man any more than I already do :)

Sounds to me like he's in denial about the fact that his ancestors may have owned slaves. I could see where a racist may even be proud of it.
