I spent a year on the road, living in a tent, and I can tell you the one thing I regretted most was not understanding the difference between water resistant and waterproof when I was buying a tent. That said, the best tents for a single person are waxed canvas army tents, which unfortunately are pretty heavy and bulky. If I had to do it all over again, I'd do what I saw some fellow travellers doing and use a hammock with some plastic sheeting. The hammock can be strung between any two trees, keeps you off the ground, is easy to set up and take down even in the dark, and stores weightlessly in your pocket. The transparent plastic sheeting (you can get some free by asking anywhere they sell appliances; they come shipped in them) protects you from both rain and mosquitoes while allowing you to see the stars at night. And like the hammock, it folds down small and light for travel.
