I cannot get Chinese symbols to show up on my computer. Do I need to download something to make it work?

Yes, you need to install support for Chinese characters. Go into the control panel and get to Regional and Language Options. You need to install support for east Asian languages and ensure you also install the keyboard. You will also need to specify if you are using Traditional (People's Republic of China) or Simplified (Republic of China, Taiwan.)
