Politics, and a string of great leaders.

organized western military might! Superior armour (panoplia) , and superior way of fighting that was unmatched until the roman legion, the phalanx. Disciplined fighting men that could repel any fighting force of the time! western thought...democracy and freedom and the idea that law was more important than free will.

I agree with Max Power. Every revolution of thought (which is basically what the Greek civilization was that made it great) is because of a whole bunch of coincidences that happened.

wasn't the roman empire the one that was truly great? the greeks had their very original art that which the romans copied..but the roman empire was fierce military wise and gobbled up a lot of land for their empire
