I've been there only once but drove from 'exciting' DesMoines (as the pilot called it on arrival) to Cedar Rapids so I got to see a bit more of the countryside which I thought was beautiful (I visited in late spring). I was pleasantly surprised with DesMoines (particularly after the pilot's remark). I found it to be a very pretty and clean city, the river running thru the center is beautiful. It offers most of the amenities of a big city yet, it's small enough to retain all the good qualities and charm of Mid-America. I even found a place to go Salsa dancing and ended up protesting the repeal of the inmigration reform on the park with a bunch of Spanish people. Ha ha! Shortly after getting back, there was a survey published reporting DesMoines to be the best city in the US to raise a family. I can certainly see why! I couldn't see much of Cedar Rapids thou, couldn't find a place to go dancing and even got caught in the midst of a tornado warning, an evacuation from the hotel and all that. Not fun!

I love Iowa - we lived in Omaha and used to go over to Iowa all the time. It's a beautiful state with wonderful people.
