  • Coin grades are the levels of "wear" a coin has that enables collectors to determine value. A coin with less wear has more value. Many books exist on this topic, so I will summarize here. The general grades and their abbreviation are: FDC "Fleur-de-Coin": Flawless, no sign of wear. Unc "Uncirculated": New condition, but not perfect. EF "Extremely Fine": Slight wear upon close examination. VF "Very Fine": Some wear on raised surfaces, good detail. F "Fine": Considerable wear, main features still sharp. fr "Fair": Very worn, but features still distinguishable. poor or worn: Features and lettering worn away Note: Grading is not a science. It is not precise, and it is better to get the opinion of many for determining exact grades. Also, this website is a great resource for grading US "Indian Head" cents: http://www.indiancent.com/grading.htm
