I guess you could write - I studied hard so that i wouldn't fail the exam. Your sentence is not exactly correct but i get what you mean.

It's not exactly correct, but most people would understand what you meant. It's more precise and a little more formal to say, "in order not to...." The sentence would read, "I studied hard in order not to fail the exam." Better yet, avoid the negative and say, "I studied hard in order to pass the exam."

The sentence is ok grammatically, but it is not idiomatic. If you wanted to use that particular word order you could say 'I studied hard so as not to fail ...'
