The casinos and bookmakers. But yes, professional gamblers can make long-term wins by taking advantage of the less skilled. Professional poker players can consistently beat the less skilled. Professional horse-players take advantage of the foolishness of the less able. But the amounts they make are tiny compared to the casino take.

The house. Certainly not the spouse.

Donald Trumps of the world.

I do. But, it's not gambling if it's a skill game. If anyone is planning on winning at video poker or slots in the long run, it won't happen.

A professional gambler might win money in the long term, but they give up so much. Being a pro poker player is not glamorous. Believe me, I tried it. Winning money isn't all that difficult, because the level of play is for the most part beyond horrible. But winning money, and being a winner are two different things. The stress and emotions from being a pro were too much for me. The money doesn't mean anything after a while, it's only a way to keep score. When I lost a $800 pot, I didn't think, "well, there go my rent" - Instead I would just shake it off, and say to myself, did I play the hand good? If I did, then who cares the outcome. So, does anyone win? Not the players. How about the house? Yeah, I guess, they win dollars. But what do they contribute to the society? A co-worker of mine today told me about Macau in China. He said the entire population over there would work all week, and then gamble on the weekends. The city was not sophisticated, it's resources were all allocated to the the gaming industry. That's where all the money ended up, not in the roads, or parks, or the schools. So, does anyone TRULY win? The very few owners of the casinos do, but they might well burn in hell. Who knows, tough question.

The winners.

To coin a certin quote: "The House Always Wins!"
-
No. Not unless you have that 1 big win. If not, chances are stacked up against you, and as you know gambling is all about chance. Only the house wins.
-
Hell yeah, the first time I played texas hold 'em at the Hustler I won $200 in 45 minutes on a 2/4 table. :-)
-
Yes. The bookies.

Yes, money can be made if you have: (a) enough stake (starting money) (b) patience, and (c) the ability to assess the odds correctly. Assessing the odds means working out: (1) your chances of winning, (2) your profit ratio (winnings/stake). Let's say, for example, Your chances of winning are 1 in 5, your stake is $100, and your winnings would be $300. Should you do it? No, you should not. Why not? Well if you keep on doing this, say 1,000 times you will have won about 200 times and you will have lost about 800 times. So your winnings would amount to about $60,000. But since this would have cost you $80,000 you would be out of pocket by about $20,000. On the other hand, if your chances of winning were (say) even, then it's a different story, and you should "bet". This all assumes that you can stand the real possibility of a long losing streak. Both casino operators and successful gamblers look at things this same way.

ya, the people who do not gamble
-
Yes... The Indians. Now go to Mohegan Sun, like good little white men and gamble away! You owe us for the introduction of alcohol and guns and for raping our females and stealing our land and killing our babies and elderly!
-
yes I am A pro gambler mainly horse racing, and yes i do sometimes lose. But I make my living from it.
-
The bookmarkers gamble with the odds that they offer and they usually truely win profit because if they didn't they wouldn't be still around. I have been gambling for 4 years and I am winning in gambling against the bookies but not a lot to be happy about but it is fun. I bet on sports tennis, basketball, snooker, soccer mainly, never horse racing because I don't like watching horses running all day.

There are ways of playing the odds to your advantage, and some people are able to make a living by properly playing the odds and using little known or underused information to exploit the odds (ex: you know a quarterback never plays well in night games because he has to wake up early to take his kids to their Mom's house, and this fact is largely not known by bookies). There are other forms of gambling that focus on a combination of skill and chance, like poker, in which a skilled player can actually make quite a bit of money consistently. In these forms of gambling, losing some money happens consistently, but if a person can minimize those losses and maximize the probability of winning, there is good money to be made. In terms of casino gambling, there are few few ways to make money, unless a person notices a flaw in the system that they can exploit, such as a poorly weighted roulette wheel. In most cases, your best chance is usually placing large bets on only a few rounds and walking away after you've made some money. Generally speaking, the more you play, the more you lose.

Usually only the casino wins :) But I have won a few times. First, about 6 years ago, $500 at a local indian casino. Then when I went on my honeymoon, I won $2,500 on a slot machine on the cruise ship, then later that night another $500 at the roulette table. That was awesome.
