  • Your workplace HR department can advise you on the benefits they offer regarding maternity leave. As well, read up on Canadian government unemployment insurance guidelines (UIC) re maternity leave at http://www1.servicecanada.gc.ca/en/sc/ei/benefits/maternityparental.shtml Some workplaces give additional time or added weeks of full benefits to their employee not included with UIC. Some do not. At the very least, workplaces are obligated to follow those policies set out per the government link above.
  • It has to be taken soon after the child is born by either the mother or the father or you lose the chance. It's done to have a parent with the child while it's at it's more vulnerable.
