Okay, I really think you should sit down and talk about this with him. Seems to me that it's like you say, he says this out of insecurity. 'Joking' about it feels probably safer for him then to show his real emotions behind it, which is the fear of loosing you. But what he does is the opposite of safety, because he is hurting you with it, and there is no relieve for his true feelings. If he feels so insecure, there is probably something behind this insecurity. Eiteh you have had some realtional problems yourself with him, or his insecurity goes deeper down. You can't solve this insecurity for him, but if the two of you have a real good conversation about it, in which you can really tell him how this feels for you, and he can really tell you how he feels, that should bring you closer together. Then, at least you both may have some real understanding about each others feelings, instead of joking around and vaguely telling you what bothers you.

It might help to tell him you'll make his jokes real life if he doesn't get over his sh*t :)
