  • Yes it's an asymptote. I can tell you why google is giving -1.99520041, you didn't say "tan 90 degrees" so it's assuming you mean 90 radians. However, if you DO say tan 90 degrees it says 1.63317787 × 10^16 Which is still not right but at least it is hinting at the correct answer. We can guess how google is doing it. It's converting 90 degrees into radians, but not exactly. It couldn't do it exactly as the answer is pi/2 which can't be written exactly, not even as an algebraic number. The number it makes is about 1.6x10^-16 too small, and so when it finds the tangent, it gets that strange answer.
