A cockatoo is a major adoption. It's like bringing a sassy 3 year old into your home that will never get past that age. They usually are like spoiled little kids. They can be very loving and sweet but they can try your patience as well, with yelling and chewing and much flapping and dancing. They can make you laugh and laugh with their antics, too. They aren't the best of talkers but do repeat many words. We've had some fabulous times with cockatoos, one living into his 30s. But he never grew up lol!!! He'd sleep under the covers during naptime and play with the cats, ride the dog's back and hang upside down while screaming my name and giggling just like me. They are sometimes hard to find, it's best to find a handraised one. So you need to search for breeders. The only breeder I know of and I don't know if they are a good breeder or not is someone in Burlington, Iowa 52601, (319)-752-3918 or by e-mail XxbirdsxX@aol.com I think they have Umbrella cockatoos.

Parrots sure are a lot of work! I would recommend trying to find a bird sanctuary or rescue organization, and asking them if you could foster a cockatoo. Here in B.C. there's a great place called Greyhaven, but I don't know if Iowa has anything similar. By fostering a cockatoo, you can see what living with one is all about, before making a lifetime commitment!

Definetely do as Galeanda suggests and find a breeder. Please do not get one from a pet store. You just don't know what that animal has gone through. And they will lie just to sell an animal. And please do your research on whatever breed you choose. Each cockatoo has their own pluses and minuses. Just wondering! Have you ever had a bird before? I only ask because cockatoos are not like other parrots. They really need ALOT of attention. We had our Sophie for nine years and cockatoos are not recommended for a first bird. Which we found out after we brought her home. But, if you find the right one, it will make a wonderful pet. Don't pick the one YOU want, pick the one that wants you. It is also helpful to have your significant other and children (if you have them) with you. The bird you eventually choose could love you and hate your partner.
