Question

My 14 y/o female African Gray (Congo) ALWAYS plucks all of her red tail feathers. She has never allowed them to stay grown out. Vet says this is ok but she is so pretty with them.. any suggestions on why? They are so pretty but she is not having it.

It could be a number of things making her pluck, Humidity levels, her diet, enviornment, health issues ect.... has she been plucking since you got her, how big is her cage, how much time you spend with her, what type of diet is she on just seeds or pellet and fresh veggies and fruit? Has anything in her enviornment been changed since she started plucking?? Check out everything around her to figure out the cause, or she could be just bored and not have anough toys to play with and finds plucking her tail feathers is a way to occupy her time....if its nothing then there is some stuff called pluck no more and that might help......If you go on the parrot forums on Myspace they could probably help you out a lot more then me there are some Very knowledgeable parrot people on them.

I have one Cockatiel that used to constantly pluck her feathers out. I took her to the Vet and he said she had some kind of skin problem, and gave me a spray, which worked. But she still does it from time to time. My new Vet said it is nerves.
