I'll make you a helluva deal on my 1940 LaSalle. One of a kind street rod built by me. Guaranteed to turn heads, and runs great!

if you want a NEW car and you want to stick to $12k max, there is actually only one choice; only one new car is under $12,000, and that's the Chevy Aveo. It's not a bad little car, but it's not likely to turn many heads. You can get a Chevy Cobalt for a couple thousand more, which is a little easier on the eyes. If you want to stay with your budget and actually turn heads, you should look for a good used car.

You'll get more from for your dollar from a domestic car, since the depreciation comes a bit sooner than imports (evens out after about year five), and the quality of all cars is excellent these days. Unlike years ago, you almost cannot buy a bad car now. The new Cobalt idea is not bad, especially considering the deals you can get on them now. Then you'd have a car with no expenses for 5 years or 100,000 miles, outside of oil changes. Used you still get the full factory warranty (the remaining time, anyway), though, so if saving money is a prime up-front consideration, it's not a bad way to go. Many people only buy 1-2 year old cars.

Do you have a Carmax near you? I just went to Carmax a few weeks ago, and they placed me with the car that was absolutely perfect for me both in my budget and getting the car I wanted. There's no reason to go new, and Carmax will not rip you off.
