i would say it is not permitted, but you would need to look it up. It would be too easy just to return, in volley, a ball pitched only to a limited area of the court. It would be too easy. If you were allowed to do it, everyone would be doing it by now. They were My thoughts on the subject: NOW here is the official view on it - cut and pasted for your enjoyment: Case 1: Is the receiver allowed to stand outside the lines of the court? Decision: Yes. The receiver may take ANY position inside or outside the lines on the receiver’s side of the net. The service shall pass over the net and hit the service court diagonally opposite, before the receiver returns it. I'll tell you what IS allowed: Just like in cricket, you are permitted to serve underarm; I saw it done in a match between Steffi Graf and Martina Hingis! The server won the point.
