Personally, I don't think there are any good arguments for the seperation of Quebec unless you go solely on the fact that that is what they want and I am sure they would be very happy if they got it (keeping in mind of course that that isn't the entire population of Quebec). I do have reasons why I am against seperation but that isn't your question :) Are you from Canada? Whereabouts?

I'm a "québécois" and i'm hoping that one day Québec will separate from the rest of Canada. Why ? First, to protect our french language and our french culture. On that, any canadian will agree that we are strongly different. We have our own movie, music and litterature industries, more active and creative that the rest of the country combine. Most canadian like the idea of the bilingual system but most of them are not (most Quebecers are bilingual). We are also more environment friendly, hoping to achieve the Kyoto objective. There is none of that in the west part of the country... One other good reason is to pay less taxes. In Quebec, we have two taxes to pay, one federal and one provincial. This money belong to us and a big part is staying in Ottawa. There is a lot of other reasons i could had but i'll just say that without Quebec, Canada is just another state of the U.S. So that's why they don't want to loose us but there doing nothing good for us to stay with them (i want to Ottawa recently and nobody was able to speak to me in french. That's sad). It is possible to get our independance in peace and respect. Merci !

Preserving their culture and language are pretty good reasons (in my opinion). I like Québec, though. I don't want them to leave us. I do understand why they'd want to, though. We did study the reasons why many people who live there want to separate from us in school.

I could see why Québec would want to leave Canada. To have any sort of job in Québec you have to speak English and French. I dont find this fair. Imagine if all Canadians had to speak English and French to find a job. The English wouldnlt be too happy about that. Québecois are told they have to go to French school and learn French then when they leave they are told they have to speak English to work in their own province. Bilingualism is a one way street in Canada.

The rest of Canada can't stand those French assholes. That ought to be reason enough!

Thanks for the DR, FA.

It'll be a shorter drive to Nova Scotia.

Iwas there once and I liked it. But I guess you should do what the people want.

ok, there are actually more arguments for quebec separatism then what you previous people have stated. For one the history of canada itself shows how justified the act of separatism is. The Seven Years War a.k.a. the Conquest? The Lower Canada Rebellions? Confederation? The Meech Lake Accord? all of these historic events justify the separation. Plus before you respond and tell me that;s stupid you should know that i am totally against separatism...yet that does not mean it isnt justified.

Before you read on, I would like to state that I'm trying to be objective here, in that I don't really care if Quebec separates or not. This is just what I think will happen if they did. Not to sound cold, although it is, but my best argue meant would be so that they could crash and burn and then we'd just take them back in. The simple fact of Quebec is that they feel that they can be self sufficient but they fail to realize what the impact will be on their market trades if they are no longer a member of not only one of the most powerful countrys in the world, but they would create animosity with trade partners. Businesses would fear buying/selling into Quebec for months, possibly years for fear of their failure. It matters not whether they would succeed, it only matters how others perceive their chances and if that isn't favorable, well, the market will go somewhere else and charge higher rates to Quebec-ers. Don't forget, there is NO trade contract with the country of Quebec, and if the separation goes politically sour, there will be insanely high transport and duty taxes on ALL goods going in and out. Quebec would go broke just trying to make an honest living, their businesses would have customers that are interested in something cheaper and thus would look elsewhere. Culture be damned, it'd be withered away in the efforts made just to survive. Also, a minor side not here but uh, is Quebec's culture really that in danger? As a resident of Ontario, a neighboring province, (that I mention for those of you not from Canada) I have always been confused by this. I have 0 problem with Quebec-ers speaking two languages or wanting to have their our culture as, well, most of Canada is like that. There's the prairies, the east-coast, the north, Ontario (often jokingly referred to as the united states of Canada) and Quebec as the various culture subgroups. This has always been this way, so why would we even bother trying to change it? To trim it down, what would be in it for me to try and change Quebec's culture? The answer is nothing, so why is it that they seem (or perhaps it is just me, which is possible) to feel like Canada wants to force them out of being this way? I'm sorry for the super long answer.

Hello Everyone!!! Now I am going to tell you all that some people are so stupid its not even funny. All this stuff about separatism is just nonsense, and people only thinking about me, myself, and I. Why do people always have to be so proud. Everybody who is in for separatism is stupid because they are not thinking about the consequences, of what could all happen because of the separatism. Now everybody lets just take a minute to think what could all happen if we separate....think...Now I will tell you a few things about myself I live in Alberta...I was born in Alberta. My mother is french and my dad is dutch. I speak french and English and so do all my relatives on my moms side of the family. I have nothing against french people or English. And as far as I can see nobody that I have ever met in my life does and none of them are from Quebec. So whats is this big thing all about. Now another thing is Canada is supposed to stick together. We are a free country yes I know. So why can't we just get along. Think about it if Quebec was separated from Canada and there came a war where we had to defend the country do you think that either country's could defend themselves properly. And don't tell me there is never going to be a war because there are always wars. Why do you think China is so prepared for war, they have a couple million foot soldiers. When your doing a very difficult job and you have other people helping you and you are all working together, and agreeing with each other about how to do things. The jobs is going to go quickly, and smoothly, right? But if you are not working together and you are all fighting about how to do things the job will take twice as long to get done and maybe it won't even get done properly, also it would cause fights with every-one arguing about how to do things. NOW APPLY that to the country. And you will see what could happen if we don't stick together on things talk things over and think about everybody not just ourselves and our benefits but about everyone and their benefits. Quebec has no reasons to separate from the rest of Canada we need each other to survive in this raging world. That's about all the time I have for now to say anymore. I know this is not put together very well but I am sure you will all understand my points here.

Sorry but I am now living in one of the most screwed up areas on the planet and I have bigger fish to fry.

"Supporters of sovereignty for Quebec believe that the current relationship between the province of Quebec and Canada doesn't reflect Quebec's social, political and economic development. Moreover, many ascribe to the notion that without appropriately recognizing that the people of Quebec are culturally distinct, Quebec will remain chronically disadvantaged in favour of the English-Canadian majority. There is also the question of whether the French language can survive within the geographic boundaries of Quebec and where French-Canadian society and culture impact what is an inherently multi-cultural country. Further, given Canada's modern founding as a French colony and the constant and consistent influence of French-Canadian culture and society on Canada's historical development, it becomes increasingly difficult to determine whether Canada could exist at all without Quebec. Separatists and Independentists are generally opposed to the present federal system in Canada and do not believe it can be reformed in a way that could satisfy the needs of Quebec's French speaking majority. A key component in the argument in favour of overt political independence is that new legislation and a new system of governance could best secure the future development of modern Québécois culture. Additionally, there is wide-ranging debate as to defence, monetary policy, currency, international-trade and relations and whether renewed federalism - a process which would give political recognition to the Quebec nation (in as much as other 'founding' nations, such as Canadian Natives and Inuit in addition to British-Islanders) could satisfy the historic disparities between these cultural nations and create a more cohesive and egalitarian Canada." Because you have to speak English to get even the shittiest jobs. Do American's like it when they go to get a job waiting tables at some restaurant in Los Angeles and the manager tells them since the entire kitchen speaks Spanish, he'd really rather have somebody bilingual? I guess snotty rich folks who have nothing better to do than sit around studying a second language don't mind. But for people that have to put food on the table, that's bullshit!

Well from what I've observed when my job took me to Canada: The collective average emotional maturity of Canada would rise- significantly. This is because I cannot count the number of times I walked into a shop to do some business and the proprietor simply refused to speak to me unless I spoke to him/her in French. So I did: Monge de la merde, a morte! French is going the way of Latin. Deal with it.

If the city of Quebec were an independent city state like Monaco, or the Vatican the people of Quebec could stop spending money on dual language signs. The rest of Canada would benefit from the reduced cost of providing Federal services to Quebec. Canada would also benefit by charging proper fees for services and goods that Quebec wishes to import from Canada. If you are talking about the Providence of Quebec, I can think of no good coming from separation.

The french ancestry is overwhelming and abrasive to the more docile westerners.
