  • Your regular family doctor can diagnose ADD and prescribe the medication. Your child's school, if he is in one yet, can do a prescreening for you that you can take to your doctor. It can be very helpful. Good luck.
  • i know plenty of people who have dealt with ADD by themselves if its very severe then you can get him ADD medicine. and yes you could take him to a doctor to diagnose.
  • I had my son evaluated by his pediatrician, a neurologist, a psychologist and a psychiatrist at the age of five. I had a few reasons for getting so many people involved -- from learning how to parent an ADHD child to having a support system in place when it came time for my child to go to school. Over the years, I was very glad I had people on my side because of things like nosey neighbors who called social services on me because I wasn't "parenting my child correctly" to the school system who fought me when I decided to take my boy off medication when he reached puberty. The more people you can get in place now who have a complete picture of your child's needs, the better it will be down the road. My heart goes out to you, it is a long road. My son just graduated from community college with an AA degree in computer applications so hang in there.
  • Your local community mental health center should have a child/adolescent office. They may have quite a waiting list. sometimes a referral from your school counselor can bump you up on the list. We have 3 generations in my family, doing fine. i even know an ER doc, who thrives on the constant change. Dont worry so much, its hardest at the very beginning till you all get in a routine.
