  • You need to configure your wireless router to use an authentication protocol, such as WEP, WPA, or WPA2. WEP is the oldest and weakest of these protocols, and WPA2 is the newest and most secure. If your router is relatively new, it will support WPA2. When you enable authentication, you need to add a password. That password should be fairly long and not easy to guess. After you set that up, your laptop will know it has to authenticate with your router via whichever protocol you chose, and will ask you for that password. For instructions on how to configure your router for WEP, WPA, WPA2, dig out the manual that came with the router. If you don't have that, find the model number of the router and go to net gear's web site and download or view the manual there.
