His comedy developed an early following. He has avoided major scandals. He seems less effected by stardom than most. He seems like a real person, someone you'd like to know. He seems harmless. He has avoided a face lift, it seems, and looks his real age. Points for that.

Hes great in every movie he does. I recently watched Polar Express with my son and his voie over was outstanding.

Tom Hanks is the "everyman", he is the Jimmy Stewart of his generation. As mentioned, he has avoided scandal. He has been generous and has taken the lead in working with charities.
-
Forrest Gump.

He's a very good actor in a wide variety of different genres.

Acting isn't about cuteness. Agreed, not much to look at, but that has nothing to do with acting. Case in point: George Clooney, a honey who can only play himself. Give George Clooney a friggin volley ball, an hour, and no other actors on screen. I say the audience shoots themselves in their individual heads before the first ten minutes is up.

Well, probably because of his likable public image, his amazing acting ability and the fact that he picks what movies he does very well (exp: Philidelphia, Cast Away, Forest Gump, etc...)
-
Who cares what they look like! I believe people can relate to him, he looks and is like a regular person he doesn't let it boost his ego to the point of outrageousness! and also Forrest Gump= amazing!

He is NOT pretentious. He avoids getting into rag newspapers and keeps a low profile. Everyone who works with him say he is very genuine and kind. He takes roles in films that are for the most part heart warming or very well done (BIG, FOrest Gump, Castaway, etc). He is Mr. Clean Cut guy with a wife who is also. He is VERY humble if you ever see him talk about his awards or skills. Alot of people loved/like other actors who frankly were not handsome either -- Dudley Moore, Olivier in his older years, Michael Caine, Lee Marvin, Robert Redford (his face is potmarked if you see him in person) Sean Penn (not a handsome guy by most people's standards) Bill Murray (not good looking but very well liked as a comedic actor). He is just your "guy next door" looking guy, but has a sweetness as well as a manly side. That is why "You've Got Mail" did so well I think He can swear and play the bad guy or semi macho guy, but he has a very soft and gentle side also.

I like his sincerity.
-
Because he has stared in some major films. And he almost always plays a hero.
