nobody ever really owns their home. if you don't believe me, stop paying property tax and see how long you can stay in your home.

Yes, paid it off early for several good reasons. At top of list is that I live in Florida and have legally protected myself against lawsuits. In this state, a home or car cannot be taken to satisfy debts, and neither can annuity income securities. Second top reason was that I assumed that I could use the amount I was making in interest and principal could be put to better use. It's best to be debt free. I have never been wealthy but save 10% of whatever I make; pay off all credit card charges each month, never carrying a balance just to avoid paying heavy interest; charities get another 10%; and I live an travel pretty well on the rest of my income, which some higher income individuals may consider to be rather meager. (Started doing that many years ago when I made minimum federal wage.)
