Go back in history only a hundred years and you'll find 16-year-olds doing a grown-man's work and taking on a grown-man's responsibilities. Some are suited, some aren't. So if the question is whether he is "ready", the answer depends on his maturity. If the question is as to method, such as walking, that might work but I'd try the train, bus, plane or car. Takes money and time and there should be something to do at the other end of the journey.
