I think the jerk is just obnactious. Brutally honest is just beign cut and dry.

sometimes not very much. i suppose the main difference is a non-jerk only shares their opinion when asked, and then shares their opinion gently. for instance: friend: how do you like my new dress? non-jerk: may i be brutally honest? i've seen you wear better. a jerk, however, delights in sharing their opinion, regardless of causing hurt. for instance: jerk, (upon noticing friends unfortunate choice of clothing): whoa!! i saw that very same dress on the strip last night, what's the name of your pimp? honesty need not be 'brutal'. peace.

The difference is their motive. A brutally honest person may not realize that their comments hurt. A Jerk may make a comment BECAUSE it will hurt.
-
Intent. Brutally honest means that you know it will hurt but overall it is required for the person to know in order to move on/cope/fix. I am brutally honest in many areas of my life, it is a lot easier than circling a topic over and over to no end (aside from frustration). . Being a jerk means you say something to hurt the person, or saying something that does hurt a person without having a reason that what you said will help them. (if that makes sense). example: Honest: Your son has a cocaine addiction and is spiraling out of control. Jerk: So i hear that Johnny was so strung out on coke that he slept with a transexual prostitute. How can you tolerate a son like that? If it were me i'd slap him so hard that his grandkids will still feel it in 60 years!

A brutally honest person doesn't mean to hurt ones feelings as a jerk does.

1) "jerk: (US, slang, pejorative) A person with unlikable or obnoxious qualities and behavior, typically mean, self-centered or disagreeable, and often not very intelligent." Source and further information: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/jerk 2) I think that the main difference lies in the way you are considering that person. If you say that they are brutally honest, you are qualifying their behavior, in particular or in general. Every single act of that person is observed and evaluated. If you say that they are a jerk, you are giving them a name and are thinking in narrow-minded categories (stereotyped thinking). The person is classified in a particular category and it will be difficult for them to prove you wrong in the future.
