No. The word "homophobe" was created by the American media 53 years ago and anyone who ever studied classic languages shudders when they hear it because even schoolboy understanding of the classics is enough to see that homophobic actually means fear of repetition or fear of sameness. If you want create a word that means fear of homosexuality then you would need to select other root words -- not homo. Ultimately, people who feel the need to use "homophobic" not only get the Latin wrong, they usually fail to understand that the person they are talking about often doesn't fear homosexuality -- but rather dislikes or disagrees with homosexuality.

The true meaning of homophobe or being homophobic is to "have a fear of", WE have come to think of that word to be the hatred of. Either way "disapproving of" and either "a hatred of or a fear" of are very different things. I can disapprove of my husband playing video games, but I don't hate or fear my husband or the video games. I also don't think any less of or more of my husband for playing them. It's his decision.

How can someone "disapprove" of an inborn trait? Does this person "disapprove" of left-handedness, and green eyes as well? So, by the very nature of the question, the answer would be yes. It's like someone "disapproving" of someone's black/white/red/yellow skin and not wanting to be called a racist.
-
a phobia means they have a fear of it, so unless they are actually afraid of anyone homosexual, no.
-
This sounds like a Vice Presidential Interview Gotcha question. Can't people disagree with your viewpoint without being labled? My answer to your question is no.
-
Phobia = "....llogical fear of an object or a particular class of objects." (Webster's 7th Collegiate Dictionary) No, you can disapprove and not be a homophope or have a phobia about something.
-
No. People have their own philosophical and religious reasons for not approving of homosexuality. That does not automatically make them a homophobe. Far too many are though.
-
not at all. I think "homophobe" is a label applied a little to loosely to anyone who isn't in the politically correct line
-
If a person is not homosexual and disapproves of homosexual behavior for themselves, they are not homophobic. If a person is not homosexual and disapproves of homosexual behavior for others and wants to impose their own will on other peoples relationships, they are homophobic.
-
there saying that some people that claim to be homophobic really are like that because they have hidden homosexual fantasy and there in....wait for it.....DENIAL!! !
-
In as much as I believe someone who 'disapproves' of black people is a racist, yes I do think so. I believe the basis for anger is fear.
-
no, you asked homosexuality, not disapproves of a homosexual (person)

While the literal meaning of the word means to fear, it has come be used as one who hates/loathes/discriminates against/is intolerant toward/disgusted by LGBT people. When it comes to any kind of discrimination, whether it's against homosexuals, or someone of a different race, religion, culture, etc, most people certainly seem to fear that which they don't understand...and that fear and ignorance, in many cases, manifests itself into hatred and intolerence, and in some cases into abuse/violence. For those of us who are LGBT (or for any minority), it can be a scary thing. Certainly, for many that seems pretty complicated, but it's a vicious cycle many of us actually witness.

Either someone is homosexual or not. There is not much to disagree with. After all what exactly are they disagreeing with? Our existence? Marriage? The pursuit of equality? If someone ‘Disagrees’ with homosexuality on a religious bases I believe they are a hypocrite not a homophobe. Leviticus 20:13 (New International Version) 13 " 'If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads. This verse is the verse most used to justify Christian hate. It clearly states that the good Israelite and by extension Christian is supposed to murder gay people. If the person has a problem with this verse it stands to reason that they should reject it. By not either rejecting it or carrying it out they become hypocrites
