Does anyone have any idea of the origin of the phrase "Face of the Earth" especially as used in some Bibles?

It is a King James Version expression. It uses face in the same was as we use the "face" of a watch, or the "face" of a gem or even a cliff "face". IT means the " flat side facing a person".
