Some cities have Meet Market things... bunch of singles of different ages go out to just have fun and meet other people. Having friends find you people is generally the easiest and best bet I would think though... or co-workers.

some supermarkets have nights where singles shop at a particular evening in the week. day coach trips to a place with a friend, you're likely to meet fellas single, divorced and widowed. taster courses in night college meeting other people wanting to learn something and perhaps meet someone too with similar interests. go to tango and salsa classes.some men love to dance. join a local walking group and chat to different people while you're walking. borrow a friend's dog and take it to obedience classes and meet men trying to tame their dog. join a food club. here we have a pudding club. once a month you get to have a 4/5 course taste of all the british summer puddings and chat over a nice bottle of wine. all the best.

The best way to meet someone is when you're NOT looking. Each time I've met a man it was when I was least expecting it to happen. Timing is everything.

Try craigslist. It's the sewer of online dating, but, hell, you're asking on answerbag, so clearly you're not too picky.

It's not just you that has the problem, as a male who is approaching 40 I had lots of trouble finding a girlfriend when I wasn't interested in the bars/clubs scene.

I am a man over 40 and I gave up dating quite a few years ago because I keep getting turned down all the time. So do you turn down men all the time or are you really interested or do you just turn down every man who ask you out?

Friends of friends are the way to go. Everyone knows of someone and you can shortcut the bar scene which is kind of risky anyway. I would recommend you find clubs or social activities where you would be placed around men. Everywhere I go, there are more men than women. They can't find you if you are staying at home all the time. Gyms are a good place too. Always more men than women.
