  • I had a computer that did the same thing. It would shut down after a while of use, the problem turned out to be heat. A fan wasn't working and the computer would simply stop when it reached a certain temperature. Check to make sure all your fans are working, if not make sure they're plugged in, if so buy new ones. There may be more answers to this question but at least that's somewhere to start. :)
  • Are you using a desktop computer or laptop notebook. If a laptop there two reasons to a shut down,if it gets too hot and it goes into hibernation quite sudden. This problem I had with my HP laptop because it gets charged up to 100% and then I unplugged it,but the power drops double fast. I switched off my laptop and did'nt use it again for 2 hours, then I switched on and lights came on,but there was a black screen. I heard a beep alarm which told me that the battery is flat, but how can that be when lights came on. I think it must be because when it went into hibernation, there was'nt quite enough power to bring it out of hibernation. What I did was unplug power cable and waited about 20 minutes until light went off and then I plugged in and pressed main swtch button and it showed the desktop items. If your prob is not same as mine,it would be advisable to see a expert.
  • If it's a computer over four years old it's best to buy a new one. today's software almost demands a core duo processor. If you can't do that, then take it to a computer shop, (computers are getting so inexpensive, it's almost as expensive to have them fixed as it is to buy a referbished one from a large name manufacturer). Sounds like the "regestry" needs cleaning out, or the battery on the mother board needs changing. It could be an over fragmented hard drive or a failing motherboard. It more than likey is not worth fixing, because if it's old enoough to have the formentioned problems, it will probably be cheaper to get a new one. If you do decide on a new one, I'd recommend you go with the newer intel 45mm chipsset or one with the larger 2 cashea' (ask the computer sales person) and the faster "front size bus". Also beef up on as much memory RAM as financially feasable, sufficient amounts of memory always ensure better performance and should be the #1 prerequiset to any computer purchace (along with the processor chipset)
  • Sudden shutdowns are often due to heat. Pop open your case and ensure everything is dust free. An air duster can is a great way to help keep those hard to reach places clean - and they are very cheap too. You may also have faulty hardware or software. Do a little bit of testing if dusting doesn't help. Grab yourself the latest Ubuntu Live CD: http://www.ubuntu.com Boot from the CD and run the live CD demo - browsing and whatnot like you normally do. If the computer shuts down again then you are most likely looking at a hardware error. If the live demo runs without shutting down, then you are probably looking at an error with your currently installed OS.
