Is the root of athiesm really "intellectual thinking"or is it an emotional response?

intellectual thinking. the emotional response is why people believe in god i think! they need something to fall back on in hard times and are desperate for support when they can't find it anywhere else.

Hey, I call 'unfair' on all those who down rated this question. I am an atheist, and yes this is based on 'intellectual thinking', but I still think this question is completely valid. If people have questions that if answered will help them understand why atheists 'are', then I think it's only fair that we answer them in a kindly spirit. My two cents.

Emotional responses are more related to theism than atheism. Which group is the one who sees the proof for their claim in the smile of every baby again? Intellectual thinking is usually what brings a person to atheism. What leads that person to desire to think intellectually about the existence of a god might be based in emotion or something else, but the foundation of most atheists is the fact that they will not fool themselves into thinking there is a god, because it seems more than a little stupid to them. They don't base what they think on poetic notions....at least, they try not to.

I think it depends on the person. I believe you can see this with people of all viewpoints, the religious included. I believe I've had a "conversion" of this kind away from religion and towards athiesm at one point when I was younger....

I would have to agree with Prognostic. Each individual is different, and it’s hard to generalize something so individual as one’s beliefs. I know Christians, for example, that are very intellectual and base their faith on that, while others are extremely emotional and based their faith on that. I personally think it takes a good portion of each, to produce true faith, but that’s just me. The point is that I think the question to be somewhat flawed, but I gave you a couple of points because it’s obviously not deliberately so. Peace!

for me i thought if good existed he must be good and make this world good since the world is far from good god must be bad that too is not possible so the only intelligent response is god does not exist .
