I thought the standard was still 15%. I usually give 10-12% of my check.. at a sit down fancy steak restaurant I might give 20% depending on the service. I don't think they have a right to tell you how much you HAVE to tip.. that is rude and if they told me that.. they might not get a tip at all.

Tipping is not mandatory, it's just a gesture. I don't think there's any amoun that should be expected of me either. I have seen worker get large tips and I have noticed that workers get no tips at all but I always tip. Usually it's about 10%. Sometimes if I'm with a group of people I ask everyone to pitch in for one big tip.

I usually figure 15% of the pre-tax check, then round an even half-dollar amount, based on service. For example: bill = $15.86 + tax, $16.97 with tax. 15% of $15.86 = 2.38 $16.97 + $2.38 = $19.35 …so depending on the service, Below average: $19.00. Average: $19.50. Above average: $20.00. Of course, I always tip based on the individual experience, but that’s my basic rule of thumb. (And if I’m eating in, I’ll usually give the delivery driver more, since s/he’s got to pay for the gas it takes to bring the food to me.)
