Tough one. In a socially awkward situation, I usually just make a light comment about how awkward things are and then try to move on. I find that distracting myself (by thinking of other things, or the other person) helps distract me from being nervous. I used to worry that in these situations I would look stupid (or low-class, dumb, etc), and eventually realized that if I simply stood there quietly sweating, then I would DEFINITELY look stupid. I've decided that I'd rather look stupid saying something, anything, rather than looking stupid as a zombie.
