A lot of things actually: On personal level; 1. Keep your vehicle engine and exhaust system fine-tuned. CO and CO2 emitted from vehicles exhaust are contributors to GW. 2. Use sprays, chemicals, refrigerants marked CFC free. CFC cause ozone depletion which leads eventually to GW. 3. Minimize use of aerosols. ON a general view point; If you are an engineer or a manager who can take tought decisions: 1. Shift from CFC to RCFC type of refrigerants. 2. Use fuels with low sulphur content. 3. Use catalytic convertors to reduce NOx and SOx emmission levels from exhuast system. There are quite many other things which can be done but then it becomes too tedious for an individual especially a layman to consider.

Rather paradoxically, I could switch off the air conditioning.

In addition to Fataka's excellent suggestions I would add. RECYCLE as much as possible. The less we throw away, the less we have to manufacture and the less we dump into land fills. Register to have your Junk Mail stopped: http://www.greendimes.com/index.html?link=header for a small fee, this company not only stops your Junk Mail BUT PLANTS TREES FOR YOU to aid in cleaning up air pollution! Plant a few trees of your own! Not only do trees add value to your property, and beautify your landscaping they also help make oxygen for all of us to breath. When you think Recycle, don't just consider the glass, plastics and paper you put out for recycling pick ups...think about what articles you can use again, or that someone else can use. Look into joining your local group of Freecycle on line. With this group you post things you no longer want or need. Sometimes they are in perfect condition, sometimes not...just post what it is and if it's working or not. Many people will fix what's broken and reuse it! You can also post "Wanted" and what it is you'd like to have, if someone has one they may realize they haven't used it for sometime and be happy to turn it over to YOU! The main rule at Freecycle is that IT must be FREE! You join according to your area, so people can easily pick up what you or someone else has "put out" for pick up. Offerings have ranged from coupons for baby formula, which most people will mail you, I once saw a $50.00 gift card posted!...to pumpkin pies (frozen) Cars, computer stuff..both working and not, TV's, Books, clothes, Kitchen things, air conditioners, pet crates...you name it...REUSE! Plan your driving trips to stores so that you drive less! Make the most of your trip! Be more aware of the household products you buy and what they add or take away from your environment. Cleaning products, Bath Products..shampoos and soaps. The pans you cook with..many give off fumes that will kill a household bird...plain old Cast Iron won't...is usually affordable and provides Iron to your diet! Subscribe to: theidealbite.com for lots of great information and links to other companies (paper free all on line)...look at what you want, when you want or hit delete if it's not one that grabs you, from foods to home improvement with a "Green" twist and an aim for dealing more in "fair trade" products. Learn what companies are most interested in thinking the way YOU DO about business practices and the environment and support THOSE companies as often as you can. Why give your hard earned money to a company that doesn't practice or care about things that interest YOU? We all have a right to support business that are willing to earn their profits WITHOUT harming the environment, and who treat their employees fairly, while providing a quality product or service that WE are paying for!

Take Shorter Showers Showers account for 2/3 of all water heating costs. Save 350 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $99 per year. Install a Low-Flow Showerhead Using less water in the shower means less energy to heat the water. Save 350 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $150. Buy Products Locally Buy locally and reduce the amount of energy required to drive your products to your store. Buy Energy Certificates Help spur the renewable energy market and cut global warming pollution by buying wind certificates and green tags. Buy Minimally Packaged Goods Less packaging could reduce your garbage by about 10%. Save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide and $1,000 per year. Buy a Hybrid Car The average driver could save 16,000 lbs. of CO2 and $3,750 per year driving a hybrid Buy a Fuel Efficient Car Getting a few extra miles per gallon makes a big difference. Save thousands of lbs. of CO2 and a lot of money per year. Carpool When You Can Own a big vehicle? Carpooling with friends and co-workers saves fuel. Save 790 lbs. of carbon dioxide and hundreds of dollars per year. Reduce Garbage Buy products with less packaging and recycle paper, plastic and glass. Save 1,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year. Plant a Tree Trees suck up carbon dioxide and make clean air for us to breath. Save 2,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year. Insulate Your Water Heater Keep your water heater insulated could save 1,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $40 per year. Replace Old Appliances Inefficient appliances waste energy. Use a Push Mower Use your muscles instead of fossil fuels and get some exercise. Save 80 lbs of carbon dioxide and x $ per year. Unplug Un-Used Electronics Even when electronic devices are turned off, they use energy. Save over 1,000 lbs of carbon dioxide and $256 per year. Put on a Sweater Instead of turning up the heat in your home, wear more clothes Save 1,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $250 per year. Insulate Your Home Make sure your walls and ceilings are insulated. Save 2,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $245 per year. Air Dry Your Clothes Line-dry your clothes in the spring and summer instead of using the dryer. Save 700 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $75 per year. Switch to a Tankless Water Heater Your water will be heated as you use it rather than keeping a tank of hot water. Save 300 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $390 per year. Switch to Double Pane Windows Double pane windows keep more heat inside your home so you use less energy. Save 10,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $436 per year. Buy Organic Food The chemicals used in modern agriculture pollute the water supply, and require energy to produce. Bring Cloth Bags to the Market Using your own cloth bag instead of plastic or paper bags reduces waste and requires no additional energy.

As individuals we can go a lot of little things that together may go a small way to reduce the effects of global warming - the things listed in the other answers above. But the biggest changes need to come from the the Governments - all Governments - who need to recognize, take responsibiliy for and start to take action on the causes and dangers of global warming.

"global warming is not reel. ijt is a lie by liberals and communists to undermine american wealth. " !?!?!?!?!! Whats the heck has American wealth got to do with anything? Thats the problem you see? MONEY! We'd rather destroy the planet than give up some money. INSANE!

recycle, solar energy, don't buy things that are heavily packaged, or use products made from known polluters, don't cut down trees, don't support the cutting down of trees, don't vote for a republican...Ok I'm tired now

global warming can happen naturaly , with out man kind intervention , its happened before , with the age of the dinos which triggered an ice age , and i fear it may happen again. as for when, no one knows.

As individuals - reduce our carbon footprint. Some simple ways to do this - reduce the amount of energy one uses. 1. Lower the heater in winter to around 70 to 72. 2. Raise the temp on the A/c to around 78-80 using fans more often. 3. Switch out several lights from filament light bulbs to energy saving florescent ones. 4. Turn off unused appliances (TV, computer, x-box) and lights. More complex/expensive ways would be to install more insulation in the house, install a solar pre-heating water system. For the road, carpool, or just plan driving activities to where you are driving less miles. I read somewhere that if every household switched just one light bulb to florescent it would eliminate the equivalent of the emissions created by one million cars. And that's only one bulb per household! Most homes have 15-30 bulbs. Linky: http://cflbulbs.com/ As a nation we need to move from fossil fuels or "burning" stuff to light and heat and power our machines. Alternatives should be in combinations, such as more wind power and more solar power and more hydroelectric power. We need to ask who killed the electric car? (search that phrase please) and ask why it is that the car companies didn't release it to the public and then took them in for crushing while the technology for newer batteries (similar to the ones used in your cell phone) was not used. We also need to ask why Hummers are still being made and sold and why SUVs are still high on the list of the new cars being bought. Nuclear power got a bum rap due to 3 mile Island and Chernobyl - however the science and the technology are far and removed from those days. We can build plants that are far safer, backed up with better more powerful computers than in the 1980's and the 1970's. It is a clean and viable option and yes we have a place to put the by products - in Nevada, in the middle of the Military zone so far below ground that it will not contaminate ground water or be in any body's way for around 500 thousand years. Globally - we need to develop the developing countries in new technologies BEFORE they establish the old way of doing things. It is easier and less costly for them to develop and grow in a "green economy" than it will be for us to switch to a green economy. We have the infrastructure for the old economy - we not only have to build infrastructure for the green, but we also have to figure out how to remove and dispose of the old infrastructure. More costs for us. Ultimately its going to take the whole world agreeing that we as a species is facing a dire threat and admit that its high time we put aside our petty bickering (wars) and our sibling rivalries (politics) and start working together or God or Mom (nature) is going to pull this car and give us a sound thrashing.

Convert your car to run on vegetable oil, then sell it and buy a bike. Take the bus in unbikeable situations. Eat local, seasonal, fruit and vegetables, and reduce your consumption of meats and processed foods. Get rid of your air conditioner, insulate your house and screw your incandescent bulbs back in for the winters.
