The fact itself isn't the smear, it's the interpretation you add which does the trick. For example, if Ms. Smith's wife was once a member of the Communist Party, the opposition can take that fact and use it to suggest that Mr. Smith is a mole who is trying to undermine our fundamental values. But if the whole story were told, it may turn out that his wife joined the party because she was in love at 19 with one of the local organizers... a much less compelling case against Mr. Smith. So it's all in the details, and it's all in the interpretation. Anybody can get the facts straight with a little effort. Getting the interpretation to be fair requires real integrity and attention.
