I tried to download Windows Defender (spyware removal) at microsoft.com but as soon as it starts to download the Internet just goes away and brings me back to an empty desktop. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking you have spyware and/or a virus. Often times, they "detect" downloads of anti-virus and anti-virus programs. It looks like you'll need some professional assistance. swabby
