Do 'Northerners' and 'Southerners' in America have the same problem with accents as we do in the UK?

Not sure about what the 'problem' is exactly, but sometimes there's miscommunication, and an older perception sometimes used to be that people with Southern accents were slower than others; not in the South myself, nor do I know many with a Southern accent so not sure if this is still true. I think people in US have more of a problem with 'foreign' accents...maybe because so many are used to only one language (even though it's so multi-cultural in pockets here).

I think so....I moved from "north" to "south" ...they do talk funny down here.

I live in the South and I don't think I have an accent but the people in the NOrth sure talk funny. LOL.. actually, I think people from the East talk really funny. I used to have a friend from GA and here accent was unbelieveable. I used to laugh every time I heard it but I have no problem with my accent LOL
