Why is it that if you have lost something some smart a**e always says "it will be in the last place you look". Of course it will be - why would you keep looking after you have found it!

It's an expression of Murphy's Law. For Example, if there were only 5 spots to look, and you looked in them all, the thing you were looking for would be in the 5th spot.

LOL I agree. I mean why do I look for my car keys in the refrigerator, when I know they are not there? If they were found there, I would commit myself..

If you're talking literally, yes, you are correct. No one in their right mind would continue looking for something after they have found it. I think the point of the phrase is to say "The last place you THINK to look", or once you've exhausted all your options. As in, literally the last little cranny in your house that is physically possible after you have completely destroyed the house/place looking for said item. Does that make more sense??
