  • To the best of my knowledge, whether there is a light inside the tabernacle (like a refrigerator) does not matter. What matters is the sanctuary lamp. The Sanctuary Lamp is kept burning in front of the tabernacle in Catholic churches as a sign and a reminder that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist (Consecrated Host) stored in the tabernacle. In the Old Testament, God commanded that a lamp should always burn in the Tabernacle (Exodus 27:20-21). If there are no Consecrated Hosts in the tabernacle then the lamp is extinguished. This happens in every Catholic Church after Holy Thursday Mass until the Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday night. With love in Christ.
  • The tabernacle in a Catholic church is not the same as the tabernacle in the Jewish Temple. You can't enter a 16" sq box. So a light inside would be useless. Besides, it already contains the Light of the World. A candle would be redundant.
  • None of the Catholic churches I've been to have had one, so I'd say that it is not required.
  • Yes, a fire to be more exact
