I want to add a wall receptacle almost directly behind an existing one on the other side of a wall. Can I just pigtail onto that box and add the new one?

Yes you can. Give yourself plenty of wire to work with it. Good Luck

I did exactly what you want to do. Just run the new wires into the existing outlet box and connect to the posts on the "old" outlet. Very easy. Its amazing what you can do for just a few dollars.

sort of, you can, but should you, how many outlets are on the circut, how many amps, will you use the full current load of the circut. Consider this, if your house burns down ,your insurer will find out about this and can legaly deny your claim. Consider everything before you just jump in
