How to Identify White Pills

Instructions

  • Step 1:
    Observe the white pills' identifying characteristics. Take note of their shape, coloring or patterns. Examine the pills for any imprints, including numbers, names or logos.
  • Step 2:
    Compare the white pills to any other medication that may be nearby. The pills had to come from somewhere and it may have been separated from a medicine container that you already have.
  • Step 3:
    Use a pill identification tool (see Resources) to input the description of the white pill. A pill identification tool will ask for the identifying characteristics that you observed in Step 1. In many cases, this can identify the white pills or at least narrow down the possibilities.
  • Step 4:
    Call or stop by your pharmacist or doctor's office if you still are not able to identify the white pills. The staff there will often be helpful in identifying any found medication. Be sure to bring the medication or their identifying characteristics.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you cannot identify the white pills from any of the above steps, they may be illegal or not Federal Drug Administration approved. It is best to dispose of the white pills if you cannot determine what they are.
  • Do not take or administer any medication that you cannot positively identify. To do so is very dangerous.
