Considering all planets and stars eventually die or become unlivable, Isn't it fair to say that all we do here has no purpose unless it leads to colonization of other planets before ours is gone?

    Not at all...

It's true to say that nothing we do now will amount to anything of great importance to the 'Universe', or 'Reality'... But we are such insignificant parts of them that really all we have is Earth and it's inhabitants, thus all that we are involved in, or have an influence on, is Earth and it's inhabitants.

It's interesting that you hint towards our purpose being colonisation (continuation of the species), yet don't expand on that some more: Why should we colonise other planets (expand and extend the species)? If our lives are essentially meaningless, except to achieve that goal, then what purpose is there in reproducing? Surely all we are doing then is creating more of us to live pointless lives, bar even more reproduction? Hehe, it doesn't lead anywhere to suggest that our purpose is purely the survival of Humanity.

Our purpose is exactly what we want it to be, if we want our purpose in life to just be the survival of Humanity, then so be it; others among us have slightly more complex goals in life though, hehe : )

Also, unless there is an absolutely catastrophic nuclear war, natural disaster (a HUUUUGE asteroid colliding with Earth, lets say...), then Earth will continue to exist presumably until our Sun dies, which I think is estimated to be in several billion years time... No real rush to run off to other planets and have babies just yet... (Though I think it'd be f-ing incredible to travel to other planets, we don't -really- have a reason beyond exploration/research right now)

    • Its nice that you are one of the optomistics about our planet, so many think we're all going to die next year. Anyway I do think that we should propagate the species. I think that all species have that natural urge in them. If we never make it to the point where most of our population lives off planet then our lives will be short lived. We will have probably had less of a reign than alligators and insects. They've already been here longer. To be the species that breaks that bond and becomes a truly interstellar species would be one of the most rewarding things to human kind. I dont expect it to happen tomorrow. The universe goes on forever and i wont buy into the idea of an end of existance or even a beginning to that existance for that matter. I think that there is more to know and as of yet we are the only species in the universe that I know of that might be capable of learning those things. My knowledge and life as you said are limited to the planet im on but

    • Actually I'm not so optimistic about our planet right now, I fully believe that if we don't sort some things out, we'll kill ourselves within a Century ; ) Anyway, what's so important about Humanity and our continuation? All we do is slaughter billions of lives (human and otherwise) to further our own selfish desires and needs... I think it'd be absolutely terrific if we could begin living in space, etc, then maybe we could stop murdering nature so much - however, there are VERY serious restraints on this, it's certainly not likely to be possible within our life times, our our children's, or even a few generations beyond that (given the sheer amount of nothingness between us and Mars just as a basic example, it takes years to get there, imagine trying to get to another solar system, let alone one with a habitable planet on it (We're talking decades or more in a space ship, and that's considering we have enough fuel and supplies). Baring some breakthrough in technology, we're unlikely to colonise outside of this planet any time soon (Maybe Mars, maybe the moon, but beyond 'that', it's very, very unlikely, for a very, very long time)... Anyway, it's almost certain that there's life outside of this planet (unless the Theists are right, then it's perfectly possible that we're alone), we're certainly the most advanced on this planet, but considering that there are billions of billions (literally) of other stars (just that we know of), as well as the amount of time (billions of years), it's idiotic to think that we're alone (take into account the unlikelihood of life forming and the unlikelihood of there being another habitable planet, and you're still easily left with thousands, if not millions of instances of life forming) the problem is the space between them, maybe they all began and ended billions of years ago, maybe they are millions of light years away, etc... A lot of people (and it's understandable) don't grasp the absolute enormity of space, lol : P

    • Hehe, I'm more apathetic than most people, so I don't really see what is 'so' important about continuing humanity; all we do is kill for ourselves anyway, Earth and all the other life on it would be MUCH better off without us : D

    • I grasp the enormity of space. Trust me its one thing I put time into. I also know technology does advance, eventually I hope it can advance to a space travel type stage. Either way I wasnt looking for immediate results I only want it to happen before the sun blows up. Until then I think we can cope with ice caps melting and then refreezing and then melting a few times. When I think future I think very very very distant future.

    • I kind of like humans. I've never learned anything profound or interesting from an animal that I couldnt have from a human. Some are evil. whatever. Such is life.

    • There are many scientists who simply don't think sufficiently fast space travel is physically impossible (It does after all involve going many many many many many times faster than the speed of light, and from what we know it's physically impossible to even go 'at' the speed of light). As I said, I really hope there's some crazy breakthrough (I actually think there's some important studies being done right now which 'could' possibly open up field of knowledge not even considered before) it's fascinating, my only hope is that I live long enough to at least witness the beginnings of it, lol

    • Actually your wrong on one point. yes it might be billions of years until the SUN dies but the earth is heating up and it is said it will be inhospitable in about 1 billion years. This is obviously still a huge amount of time but i for one think it would be amazing to learn more about the universe by traveling further into it and meeting other species which it's basically certain there are millions of. I think that would be a great destiny for the human race. To push out further into the universe and co exist with other species.

Therefore i hope we can go on uninterrupted (by things like asteroids) for long enough that we can develop space travel enough to find a habitable planet. By doing this we basically immortalize ourselves as a race as we can then continue to search for further planets and intelligent life.

Yes this might be with the aim of survival and prolonging our species but this would be whilst meeting amazing races from other planets and (hopefully) coexisting with them peacefully. I think this would be a great time to live in so i want the human race to live on as long as possible...sorry i rambled.
