Why did the founding fathers believe that separation of church and state was so important it deserved an amendment to the Constitution?

    Separation of church and state is not even in the Constitution, the correct clause is called the "Establishment Clause" of the First Amendment. Basically, religion is not supposed to be separate at all. The only thing is that Congress does not have the authority to pass a law that declares a specific religion the "official" government religion.
