    This answer will address friction between solid objects sliding across each other, since that is what most people think of when they think of friction. This kind of friction is caused by two things: (1) Roughness of the surfaces (even the smoothest, mirror-like surfaces are rough on a microscopic level) and (2) bonding between the surfaces, especially if they are similar substances (steel sliding on steel has more friction than steel on plastic, for example).
