Does anyone here know the chances of getting pregnant with an IUD in place? Has it happened to anyone?

    It does happen. My copper iud was in for 5 years and worked fine until i got pregnant. i was told that most iud pregnancies are ectopic (implatation occurs in fallopian tube...which is a serious life threat!!). My embryo implated normally, but they were unable to remove the iud. this meant that my 11 week pregnancy was complicated! my dr told me that his wife got pregnant while on an iud and was able to carry their child to term. i chose to continue the pregnancy, but it ended poorly with a septic miscarriage (i was hospitalized and had to have an emergency dnc). i was very sick with a 103 fever!! a few days before i was hospitalized i had told my dr that something wasn't right, that i really didn't feel well. he said it was just because i was pregnant.
    so several things to take away;
    -you can get prego while on an iud
    -if you do get prego with an iud it can become a serious health/life threat
    -be your own health advocate; as much training as a dr has, it is should not over shadow what you know about yourself (you are the resident expert!).
    I no longer have an iud and i would strongly recommend others to not use one. IUD's work, but it seems like when they don't its expensive, life threatening and traumatic!!
