I get them to take the shoes off.I do not want the bottom of the shoes to dirty up my place.Guests comply without complaint.It is probably more comfortable for them to let their feet breath a little by being free from the confinement of the shoes.

I think I would take the smell,as apposed to the dirt from the city streets.
