In South Carolina, do I have to say the Pledge of Allegiance in school?

    No, you don't have to say the Pledge of Allegiance or salute it in your school (or any U.S schools as far as I have learned.) You can thank the Supreme Court in the ruling of "West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette".

    • Let's be very clear: the exception provided for religious tolerance by the SCOTUS in the WV case involved Jehovah's Witnesses and idol worship (these are the same folks who don't believe in celebrating birthdays or Christmas, you remember)... in no way should that exception for bona fide religious objection (to the "pledge allegiance to the flag... and to the republic for which it stands") that was provided in the 1960s be suggestive that there is a recent erosion of patriotism caused by Muslims and Mexicans. On Facebook, there's a "status" forward going around that says, in all caps, "IN ENGLISH" and also uses all caps to say "under GOD" (a phrase that was only added to the Pledge in the 1950s, by the way) for a very obvious political purpose, to which the SCOTUS case cited in the answer above is not in any way relevant.
