With Bill Maher, its hard to say whether it was a joke or just lunatic raving. But it certainly has never been the position of the church and its members.

    • Ihe LDS church (Mormon church) taught that black people were under a curse because they were cowardly in a big battle in heaven, before we had bodies. They also teach that when Cain was cursed by God, God made him into a black person, therefore, black people are cursed. But with the coming of the civil rights movement people began to renounce racism, so the leaders of the Mormon church suddenly had a "revelation from God" (in 1978) that the curse had expired.
In the 1830's, Joseph Smith was pro-slavery, believing that Negros were the "sons of Ham" and that Ham cursed Canaan and his descendants (Negroes) with bondage. Joseph Smith once referred to blacks in the South who wanted to fight for their freedom as "rebellious n*ggers in the slave states". http://www.angelfire.com/mo2/blackmormon/homepage.html
