Question is a little confusing, as it would depend on that perticular transmission. Such as with ten speed transmission you would start in first and once you needed to go to sixth, raise the switch to high and go into sixth up to 10. It is different in a super ten as you would only have to shift 5 times, splitting each gear. As you go up in gears it gets more complicated, in a thirteen speed you would have a lo, but could start in first unless heavily loaded. Go through the pattern. But in a thirteen speed you are only able to split the lower gears, 1-5. You can see it gets more complicated the more gears you get. In an 18 speed you can split all the gears. In an Eaton Auto shift, the transmission automatically shifts the top two gears for you. So it all depends on which transmission you have and what your hauling. There is often a time where you can "skip gears" also.

    • if you have an 18 speed the easiest way is to shift 9 w/o splitting then split 9 th gear. then once you are accustomed to it then start to split the gears..
