Help answer this question below.
I am probably going to get some negative feed back for this. I would say, don't go to New Orleans. The French Quarter stinks! The smell was nauseating. And there are endless souvenir shops filled mostly with the same old useless junk.
And if you have kids, beware. There are a lot of prostitutes walking the sidewalks.
I haven't been there since the hurricane.

Oh noes! Those damn prostitutes are so bad around kids, I'm sure they don't have any of their own that they're trying to feed.

I have to agree. Some people love it, but, it's just not my cup of tea. I went about a year before the hurricane and could not stand it. If it's crowded, you can just about forget parking in or near the French Quarter. Also, when I am vavationing somewhere I don't like being approached or hassled by people on the street.

I was there the fall before Katrina and had a great time. (no I don't drink)We stayed in the French Quarter and every morning they washed down Bourbon St.
Never was approached by anyone but waiters trying to get you to come into their restaurant. All in all was fun, were warned about the bad areas, and had no problems.

I also had I great time. I went when I was 16 with my family so no drinking was involved either. We focused on seeing the historic part of the city, the french quarter, st.louis cem., I loved it. We did get approached by a poor looking guy who kept trying to con us into giving him money though, but it was not a big deal, my nieve family kept giving him dollars for crapily washing their shoes and then we just walked away and that was the end of it. I'm optimistic so I considered it an experience.

There is a world of difference between the old Big Easy and the new Katrina wasteland. I lived there for 22 years up to 1995 and it was a nice place to visit and to live as long as one knew what to avoid. These days, there's no reason to go there for vacation or anything else. Stay away from New Orleans - you can do much better elsewhere.
