    Eyes need rest.
We rest them completely when we sleep or when we keep our eyes closed while listening to music etc.
But this alone is not enough. Eyes need more rest. As we can't give continuous rest we give them rest in installments by blinking frequently. If all the moments of blinking are added together it amounts to several minutes of rest to the eyes per hour.
Blinking is one way by which evolution ensured that eyes get enough rest.
In bright lights, such as in a TV Studio, lights tend to be bright and the rest needed for the eyes is also greater. So the TV news readers must blink a lot more than those of us watching TV news.
You will also be well advised to blink often while studying something on the computer screen. Staring unblinkingly at a monitor or TV screen deprives the eyes of rest and causes eye disorders.
