So, I would place the collar on him and correct him as he attempts to chase the chickens?

    • Start with a "NO", then use the beep when he ignores you and then use the shock (give him a chance to respond to each first...a few seconds). It won't take long for him to get down to paying attention to the beep BEFORE you have to shock him and then to just the verbal command. Shepherds are VERY smart. I used this method to stop my shepherd from chasing cars that came up our drive after my daughter's tire caught his leg. You would have thought he was smart enough to learn from that BUT, as I've often said, GSDs are too smart for their own good. He learned not to chase HER car.

I think I only ended up shocking him twice overall. Once at the beginning and once, about 10 months later, when he decided to "test" to see if it was going to happen again. It's been years and I've never had to do it again. I no longer even put a collar on him. It was the same with the invisible fence. I could probably turn it off, but every couple of years he decides to test it to see if anything has changed.
